HuffPost recently published a great article pointing out the fact that "we still rely on 'people we want to hang out with' as a metric in hiring, and it does nothing but harm... When companies prioritize how a person fits into their preexisting culture, it maintains the status quo, which for generations has given historic and systemic educational and economic advantages to white workers. The status quo still over-selects for white men." You can read the full article here.
As employers, we need to comb our hiring process for traces of culture fit. There may be questions or practices woven into the interview process that we don't realize are contributing to a workplace filled with people just like us. Abandoning the culture fit mentality will create a more diverse workforce and strengthen business. And that's the goal.
